The Medmenham Collection

The Collection covers the history of military aerial photographic interpretation (PI) and imagery analysis (IA) from World War One, through World War Two, up to the present day. The Collection is located at the Defence Intelligence and Security Centre (DISC), Chicksands, just south of Bedford and owes its existence substantially to the enthusiasm Medmenham Club members.

Additional displays now form part of the Muckleburgh Collection, near Cromer and the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. Behind the scenes, the Collection is very active in expanding its archive and continues to accept a wide range of new material covering the development and application of photographic interpretation and imagery analysis.

The Medmenham Club

The Club was established in 1946 to maintain the camaraderie enjoyed by the photographic interpreters (PIs) who served in the Allied Central Interpretation Unit (ACIU) at RAF Medmenham during the Second World War but the experience of this within the Club is clearly limited to a few senior members. However, membership has been broadened to reflect changing times and techniques and many younger members have practised PI in operational theatres throughout the world Including recent operations in Europe and the Middle East.

The Medmenham Club has become a unique association of former and serving PIs (now known as Imagery Analysts (IAs)) spanning every world event of significance from the Second World War to the present.
